摘要

The thermal transient, initiated when a translating sphere encounters a fluid environment whose temperature is different from its own, is investigated analytically for the range of low Peclet numbers. The solution for the temperature field yields the instantaneous and the time-integrated heat transfer, numerical results for which are presented graphically. The duration of the transient period is also determined. A detailed examination is made of the conditions under which the temperature changes experienced by the sphere are negligible. It is found, for instance, that for metallic spheres and gaseous environments and for most of the Peclet number range investigated, the sphere temperature is essentially unchanging throughout the entire duration of the transient period.
