SHAPE AND DEPARTURE OF SINGLE BUBBLES GROWING AT A WALL

Experiments and analysis have been carried out with single bubbles of vapour growing at a plane wall, to study the shape and changes in shape of the bubbles, their size at departure from the wall, and the time of departure. The first tests involved initially stagnant isothermal liquid and zero gravity environment in a free-fall facility (drop tower). They yielded a new understanding of the basic factors and non-dimensional groups which control the variation of shape for diffusion-controlled bubbles. Further tests with gravity or fractional gravity led to more varied shapes, which again are explained in terms of appropriate dimensionless groups. Existing theories of departure size and departure time are seen to need revision. In particular, the effect of surface tension is to assist, not delay, the departure of bubbles in many circumstances.
