摘要

An initially evacuated cylindrical vessel is suddenly filled with Argon. Spatially and temporally resolved measurements are made in the 500 milliseconds following inlet valve closure of the gas velocity, turbulence intensity, temperature and heat loss to the walls.

The results show the flow is one-dimensional and the Nusselt number based on the total heat loss correlates with the half-radius swirl velocity. Both the local heat flux and the turbulence intensity are time independent when normalized by the total heat loss and mean gas velocity respectively.

The results obtained should prove useful in validating both boundary condition and turbulence models employed in multidimensional computations of unsteady flows in enclosures. Boundary condition models are used because the coarseness of practical grids precludes resolution of the viscous sublayers. Wall functions currently used are equivocal and the present data set offers an opportunity to see how well they compute the spatially resolved wall heat flux.
