Influence of oxide films and surface damage on the emittance of 18/8 stainless steel
摘要
In many areas of engineering where heat transfer is by thermal radiation, it is important to know accurately the emittance of the surfaces involved. It is not sufficient to use the properties of pure materials, which in reality will be affected by surface roughness, oxide layers or other chemical films. It may also be necessary to know the radiant characteristics as a function of direction, the wavelength of radiation and the temperature and nature of the materials.
This paper describes total directional emittance measurements carried out on electro-polished 18/8 stainless steel specimens to study the effects of oxidation and surface damage in the absence of surface roughness. The work has highlighted the difficulty in defining the material emittance in terms of other measurable properties due to the complex mechanisms involved.
