摘要

Heat transfer characteristics of offset fin arrays in the low and middle Reynolds number ranges have been studied experimentally with two-dimensional enlarged models. The heat transfer performance of a fin array is confirmed to be little affected by the fin thickness in the low Reynolds number range, as previously suggested from numerical study. However, in the middle Reynolds number range, the fin array heat transfer performance is demonstrated to be affected noticeably by the fin thickness. This is related to the flow instability occurring in the wake of a fin on the upstream side through the discussion on the results of previously made flow visualization.
It is also demonstrated that the heat transfer of the third and downstream row fins can be enhanced simply by using thicker first and second row fins. This suggests a possibility of augmenting the heat transfer on one hand while on the other hand suppressing a possible increase of pressure drop to be introduced if thicker fins are used also for the downstream row fins.
