摘要

In a chemical process if the equipment volumes can be reduced this can lead to considerable capital savings. Compact plate fin heat exchangers (PFHE) are one type of equipment that offer this advantage, however there is little data on the operation of these exchangers under fouling conditions. Therefore the purpose of this study is to investigate their performance under accelerated particulate fouling conditions. A core test section consisting of one corrugated channel and two unfinned passages was fabricated. Experimental tests were performed for the deposition of small particles onto plain and wavy fins test sections, with and without heating. Aluminium oxide and ferric oxide particles (same average mean diameter 6µm) suspended in demineralised water were used as test fouling materials. For a given flow rate of water suspension and particle concentration, the amount of deposit onto each corrugation was measured for different time intervals. The pressure drop across each test section was also recorded.
Results show that the deposition rates were much greater, up to 3 times, under non-isothermal conditions for both particles. Under non heating conditions (30 °C) the deposition appeared to be governed by mass transfer from the bulk suspension to the wall surface and the particle deposition was mainly due to the effect of diffusion. For the heating tests (105 °C), the effect of temperature was to increase the diffusivity of the depositing species therefore increasing the rate of mass transfer to the surface material. The wavy fin corrugation showed higher deposition rates compared with the plain fin and the pressure drop was also higher.
