A NOTE ON FOULING IN A PARALLEL PLATE DUCT

摘要

In this paper it is shown that in certain applications, a fouling layer may increase the overall heat transfer coefficient and thus reduce the thermal resistance. A criterion is derived analytically for the case of a parallel plate duct. A similar criterion is given for rectangular ducts. On the other hand it is shown that the pressure drop for the fouled surface always is greater than that of the corresponding clean surface. A numerical example is also provided to highlight the findings.
