An HP-Adaptive Predictor-Corrector Split Projection Method for Turbulent Compressible Flow

An hp-adaptive Predictor-Corrector Split (PCS) Finite Element Model (FEM) has been developed to simulate turbulent compressible flow. The hp-adaptive algorithm is based on mesh refinement and increasing spectral order to generate accurate simulation results with exponential converge rate; the PCS projection method is based on a fractional step FEM, and suitable in obtaining accurate results over a wide range of Reynolds number and flow speeds. A k-? turbulent closure scheme is used in conjunction with the turbulent form of the Navier-Stokes equations; an LES procedure is currently being incorporated into the model. The method is applicable to various engineering applications, e.g. fluid structure interactions, porous media, and solidification. The hp-FEM PCS system is being combined with KIVA’s spray and chemistry models to advance the accuracy and range of applicability of the KIVA combustion model. Validation cases for flow around 2-D and 3-D airfoils are presented. Excellent agreement with experimental data has been observed for several test cases.
