NATURAL CONVECTION IN CELLS WITH FINITE CONDUCTING SIDE WALLS HEATED FROM BELOW
Abstract
Experimental measurements of Nusselt number versus Rayleigh number for fluids in cells heated from below are presented. Circular right cylinders with side walls neither perfectly conducting nor perfectly insulating
and rectangular cells were studied. Over 400 measurements in 8 cells were made. Comparisons with the Stuart-Malkus-Veronis power integral relation are shown. To make the comparisons critical Rayleigh numbers for higher modes of instability in cells with arbitrary wall heat
conduction were calculated. The completely analytical calculations agree with the experimental data within 10 per cent.
