Abstract

This work was done to determine the influence of the coolant physical property changes normal to the heat transfer surface, arising from the temperature variation Tw to Tb, on heat transfer from systematically roughened surfaces as used in Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors. Experiments were performed with nitrogen and carbon dioxide at relatively low temperatures to provide a basis for a correlation applicable to a range of reactor conditions. The practical problem was solved but in the process fundamental difficulties were encountered, and the paper contains a critical discussion of the types of correlation which have commonly been used to embrace physical property variations.
