Abstract

Results are presented of heat transfer experiments from a flat horizontal surface covered by a thin layer of water (5mm to 0.5mm) at saturation temperature and atmospheric pressure. It was found that as the liquid layer thickness was reduced dryout occurred, but that the critical heat flux could be as high as that for normal pool boiling. Mechanisms proposed for the departure from nucleate boiling in thin liquid layers differ from the existing models for normal pool boiling, and it is suggested that the appropriate model differs for various liquid layer thicknesses. Layer thicknesses at which dryout occurs are calculated, and reasonable agreement with experimental results is shown.
