Abstract

Individual pins in an axial flow heat exchanger will never be perfectly straight or accurately held in their designed positions. A general method for estimating the resulting surface temperature changes is given. Experiments are described which provide the empirical information necessary for calculating these temperature changes. It is shown that certain combinations of parameters will result in an unstable situation when pins will bow until they touch each other, however small the initial asymmetries. This has been demonstrated experimentally.
