Free convection has recently become a major field of endeavor, by both scientists and engineers. It has expanded to such an extent that subdivision into disciplines becomes necessary, with each developing further in its own diverging direction.
In reviewing free convection it is amusing to note that the two main reasons for the development of this field are its complicated mathematics and its reliability in certain cases. A third reason is its applications, which are useful and natural sometimes, although not quite free, or its inevitability in other cases. It is chosen to present this paper using these reasons as headings for its sections.
