Fouling in commercial heat exchangers is discussed. The problem of fouling of heat transfer surfaces is receiving considerable attention and new information is appearing in the technical literature. Research results as well as practical operating data are being published. This review describes recent results of the extent of fouling of various types in commercial heat exchangers and the various methods which are being utilized in an attempt to eliminate, lessen or control fouling. Recent research results are summarized and various methods of monitoring fouling are briefly described. This review serves as a supplement to several other surveys of fouling which have appeared in the past several years.
