Abstract

The effect of electric fields on film-wise condensation on vertical plates, has been reported by several researchers. Electric forces are found to cause instability of the vapour-liquid inter-phase resulting in droplet formation and reduction of the thickness of the condensate film. Thus they remarkably enhance the condensation heat transfer coefficient. In previous papers these phenomena were described only in a qualitative way, making use of experimental data.
The aim of this paper is to present a theoretical model for this phenomenon. Combining results of electrohydrodynamical and capillary instability of falling liquid films, the size of the droplets and the distance between them is determined. From this the decrease in condensate film thickness is obtained. The increase of the heat transfer coefficient as a function of the electric field strength and the physical parameters of the fluid then can be derived. A comparison is made with experimental data.
