Abstract

Heat transfer and friction loss performance for flows normal to stacks of perforated plates are experimentally studied in a subsonic wind tunnel. The hole diameter, longitudinal and transverse pitches, plate spacing, and flow velocity are varied. It is disclosed that this physical arrangement produces high thermal effectiveness and there exist two distinct regimes of heat transfer performance. The enhancement in the heat transfer and flow friction factors is intimately related to the edgetone phenomenon which exhibits the characteristics of the jet tone. Some guidelines are recommended for practical design considerations of perforated heat exchangers to achieve the optimum performance.
