Abstract

Transition from natural convection to film boiling in the liquid in the case of sudden incipient boiling on isothermal surface has been considered. To predict boiling regime expected to occur upon boiling incipience, use has been made of theory of heat transfer stability developed by the present authors in an earlier study. When considered in terms of "heat flux density on the wall versus temperature drop" incipient boiling has been found to occur both above and lower the boiling curve. From the point of view of regime stability the points corresponding to transient boiling have been shown to lie on the saddle of a crest. If natural convection results in boiling incipience below the boiling curve, no transition to film boiling is to expected. Proceeding from this approach, calculation has been made of safe superheats and corresponding heat fluxes. Comparison is made with experimental data available in literature. The discrepancy between theory and experiment is within the accuracy of boiling curve determination.
