HEAT TRANSFER FROM CYLINDERS DURING MELTING OF A THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE MATERIAL

Abstract

Melting from an electrically heated single cylinder and an array of three cylinders imbedded in a phase change material (PCM) during the charging cycle of a thermal energy storage (TES) system was studied experimentally. A paraffin (n-octadecane) having a melting temperature of 301 К was used as storage material. A shadowgraph technique was employed to optically determine the local heat transfer coefficient. The melting zone surrounding the cylinder(s) was photographically observed and studied. The results show that natural convection develops in the melt region and strongly influences local heat transfer around the imbedded heat source as well as the shape of the molten zone above the cylinder. After the plumes around the cylinders form a common solid-liquid boundary, natural convection circulation around each cylinder interacts strongly with the flow about the other two cylinders.
