Abstract

The computation of temperatures in a human body is a marriage between the principles of heat transfer and physiology. Although the application of heat transfer modeling techniques, especially in finite difference form, is relatively straightforward, the fact that the human body is a dynamic system with a most complex physiological thermoregulatory mechanism, whose properties are only partially known, creates a very challenging task for the thermal analyst. This paper reviews the physiological char-acteristics of the human body which are associated with the transport of thermal energy, and the mathematical models on which successful simulations have been based. Comparisons are given with experimental results which show that for conditions ranging from exposure to cold to the simulation
