NON-CLASSICAL FILM FREE CONVECTION IN SUPERFLUID LIQUID HELIUM II NEAR THE λ-POINT

Abstract

Non-classical free convection has been investigated using simplified thin film approximations of the boundary layer equations for a disordered He II quantum liquid layer. The results of the model calculations are compared with heat flux data for the single horizontal cylinder (Ga; dia. 1.2 × 10−3m) and related previous work. Near the λ-point the data agree satisfactorily with a simplified form of the Leonard-Clermont correlation modified for disordered diameter-independent convection. Data interpretation in terms of convection model results suggests a temperature - dependent controlling acceleration-circulation term.
