Abstract

An experimental study has been done with a saturated porous medium contained in a rectangular box of small aspect ratios inclined at an angle φ to the horizontal. In the range of the experimental conditions, φ ∈ (0, 90°) and Ra* ∈ (0,1000). Ra* being the filtration Rayleigh number. several types of thermal convective motions have been observed in thermal steady state and the mean heat transfer that they induce has been measured. A theoretical analysis has been performed using assumptions suggested by the experimental observations. This analysis emphasizes the influence of end effects on some transition criteria. Furthermore, in the particular case of the infinite layer, a unique relationship has been found between the Nusselt number and the product Ra*, cos φ.
