Abstract

This paper presents the effect of heating surface fouling on saturated pool boiling of Fluorochlorocarbons known as Freon-11 and Freon-113. The heating surface was a horizontal platinum wire, 0.29 mm in diameter and 100 mm in length. Some additives to boiling liquid were found to accelerate the fouling. The surface of the deposit was observed and its thickness was measured by a scanning electron microscope. The thickness depends on the surface temperature, the duration of boiling and the concentration of the additive. Overall heat transfer coefficient was correlated with the thickness of deposits.
