Abstract

The development of a high-powered laser and low-light-level television system for obtaining the frequency and spatial distribution of pure rotational Raman scattering from steady state and transient gas flows is described. The system has a temporal resolution of about 30 milliseconds and spatial resolution better than 0.1 millimeter. The temperature profile over a distance of from 1 to 2 cm is determined simultaneously. Examples of temperature distribution measurements in a cylindrical chamber during the time it is being filled with hydrogen are given.
