Abstract

A numerical simulation of the production of a single turbulent spot in a spatially developing boundary layer is performed. The simulations are performed on three grids with different resolution in span- and stream-wise direction. To account for the sub-grid contributions on the coarser grids a Smagorinsky turbulent viscosity is compared to the results obtained with a recovery model. It is found that the added viscosity in the Smagorinsky-simulation is much to high and no turbulent spot is formed. The use of the recovery model yields much better results. Furthermore, the simulation using the recovery model retains its numerical stability on the coarsest grids, while the solutions still show the main features of the turbulent spot.
