Abstract

Drying of moisture packed beds due to microwave heating using a rectangular waveguide has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. The effects of the interaction between electromagnetic field and dielectric property on drying kinetics were clarified in detail. It was found that the heat transport as well as drying kinetics strongly depends on the interference between transmitted and reflected waves in packed bed due to the difference of dielectric properties as drying proceeds. This investigation provides a good basis for understanding of the combined microwave and convective drying process of moisture porous materials at fundamental level.
