Conditions at the outside of a thin slice reboiler bundle determined by particle image velocimetry

Abstract

Particle image traces were obtained by PIV illumination methods in the recirculating fluid at the side of a kettle reboiler thin slice. The paper describes the apparatus and procedure. Qualitative analysis of the particle image traces revealed that although liquid approached the side of the bundle with a lateral component, the bulk of the liquid up-take occurred at the bottom of the tube columns. Based on this and other thin slice studies, it is argued that 2-D, two-fluid modelling of kettle reboiler flows is invalid when based on inter-phase drag coefficients, void fraction and flow boiling correlations obtained from 1-D vertical crossflow data.
