Abstract

Dryout and near-dryout conditions in flow boiling are of critical interest for practical applications. This paper reports some heat transfer phenomena observed in near dryout conditions for the evaporation of iso-octane in a 8.5m long, and 25.4mm internal diameter test section, uniformly heated by passing a direct electrical current through the wall. These include the abrupt reduction of the wall superheat just before dryout, the intense localised heat transfer augmentation in the presence of flow obstacles in dryout conditions and, more importantly, a conspicuous hysteresis effect concerning heat transfer enhancement in the near dryout region.
