Abstract

The paper presents the history of liquid superheat in a pool boiling system subjected to a sudden pressure release. A 304 stainless steel heater surface in contact with distilled degassed water was monitored during system pressure decay through a 1.00-inch orifice to the atmosphere. The data show that the liquid superheat reaches a maximum during the initial transient pressure phase and becomes negative during the final transient phase with release time of approximately 12 seconds. This phenomenon has not received extensive publication in the literature and yet is quite probable in cryogenic systems.
