Abstract

Heat transfer mechanisms in packed beds, especially between packed solids and wall surface were studied both experimentally and theoretically. Radial effective thermal conductivities and wall heat transfer coefficients were measured in annular packed beds for glass spheres and steel balls with air as well as glass spheres with water. Apparent values of wall heat transfer coefficient were correlated by means of the effective thermal conductivities in the vicinity of the wall surface and compared with the theoretical equation proposed by the authors, which accounts for the particular fluid mixing near the wall.
