BOILING HEAT TRANSFER FROM SINGLE FINS
Abstract
Nucleate, transition, and film boiling may occur simultaneously at adjacent positions on a fin in a boiling liquid. The heat transfer coefficient is not uniform. The usual formulas for fins then are seriously wrong. A numerical technique was used to solve for fins in boiling liquids. Tests with Freon-113 and isopropyl alcohol agree with the predictions within 20%. The heat rejected by a fin in a boiling liquid may be an order of magnitude greater than for the base metal without fins.
