Abstract

Transient and steady state natural convection was studied in a long vertical rectangular cell with mixed constant heat flux-constant wall temperature boundary conditions. Air, water and silicone were used over a Rayleigh number range from 900 to 2 × 106. Both temperature and velocity profiles were obtained.
The starting transient begins with almost pure conduction prior to the establishment of the convective pattern. In water this shift is associated with a complicated set of travelling waves. At high Rayleigh numbers air and water exhibit steady state oscillations suggesting incipient turbulence. Cell inversion transients were also studied.
Overall steady state heat transfer data agree with the correlations of previous investigators for the isothermal vertical-wall cell.
