DOUBLE DIFFUSION EFFECTS IN A CYLINDRICAL POROUS BED, FILLED WITH SALT WATER
Abstract
A cylindrical tube of inner diameter d = 200 mm, containing glass beads of 2 mm mean diameter or salt grain of comparable size up to a height of h = 400 mm, is saturated with salt water of different concentrations, heated electrically at the bottom and cooled by means of a thermostatisized cooling plate on top. Under the influence of a thus imposed destabilizing temperature gradient a stabilizing salinity gradient developed, due to thermal diffusion (Soret-effect). Results are presented for glass beads saturated with: 1. fresh water, 2. salt water of 10% concentration and 3. salt water of 26,4% saturation concentration. Experiments with saturated salt water in salt grain seem to confirm that salt is transported from top to bottom entailing elutriation of channels and concretions, respectively.
