Abstract

Heat transfer characteristics of a heat exchanger made of ribbed plates with ribs canted unidirectionally to the air flow, have been determined experimentally via the naphthalene sublimation technique. The surface having protrusions due to the presence of the ribs is exposed to air while that having cavities is exposed to a liquid. A simple method of preparing the mass transfer models so that surface geometries are exact replicas of the highly complex original surface contour is discussed. The heat transfer results obtained have been applied to an oil-to-air cooler and good agreement was obtained between the predicted and tested thermal performance.
