Abstract

A three-dimensional analysis is carried out for natural convection flows of a Boussinesq fluid (Pr = 0.721) in an annulus between differentially heated concentric isothermal horizontal cylinders using the vorticity-velocity formulation. The values of Gr (based on the annulus gap width and the temperature difference of the cylinders) times Pr are 103 and 104 The ratio of the gap width to the inner cylinder radius is held fixed at 1.6. Since relatively small cylinder length (being equal to the outer cylinder radius) is considered, the end-wall effects are evident on the fluid motion. The three-dimensionality of the heat transfer characteristics is also investigated.
