Abstract

Three examples of the use of laser optical techniques to the improvement of understanding of complex flows are described and correspond to the flows in the cylinders of internal combustion engines, in the region downstream of bluff-body stabilised premixed flames and in gas turbine combustors. Laser velocimetry was used to determine velocity characteristics in all cases with laser Rayleigh and thermocouple techniques used for temperature measurements when appropriate. Conventional probe methods have been used for the measurement of species concentrations. The reasons for choice of instrumentation are provided together with brief descriptions and sample results.
