Abstract

Industry tends toward the conservative when applying process heat transfer. The time required to apply new developments is usually lengthy.Heat transfer equipment must be able to perform in both the clean and fouled conditions.Fouling is not always understood, but is almost always affected by the philosophy applied to design. The cost to ensure that flow patterns are predictable and that equipment will not fail as a result of damage from flow-induced vibration is modest and almost always economically justified. Current problem areas are discussed and areas which require further research and development are presented.
