ASSESSMENT OF MODIFIED WILSON PLOT TECHNIQUES FOR OBTAINING HEAT EXCHANGER DESIGN DATA

Abstract

Heat transfer coefficients for exchanger surfaces are usually obtained experimentally. If these are to be determined on both sides of a heat exchanger or on one side with other side as unknown, the data reduction method of Kays and London (1984) cannot be used; a modified Wilson plot technique is used for the test data analysis. In this paper, first the original Wilson plot technique is briefly described along with its limitations outlined explicitly first time. Various modifications of this technique are then presented. An assessment of the available methods is presented subsequently. A new modified Briggs and Young method is presented for the correlation on one side when the correlation on the other side is unknown and of no interest. The effects of fin resistance and variable fluid properties are also added to modified Wilson plot techniques. Information is also presented for the experimenter to properly design the experiment.
