Abstract

The heat transfer characteristics of a "U" shaped channel with two right angle turns were studied numerically for laminar flow conditions. The geometry of the channel resembled the flow passages in thermal regenerators. The model equations were solved using a control volume based finite difference technique (SIMPLE). The Reynolds number (Re), ratio of the thermal conductivity of the solid to air (K), and the distance between the bends (b2/b1) were identified to be independent parameters. Calculations were made for Re = 50 − 1000, K = 145 − 2250, and b2/b1 = 1 − 8. The results showed that the recirculation significantly influences the local Nusselt number distribution at high Re (Re = 1000). The average Nusselt number for the inner surface of the channel (S 1) increases with K and the average Nusselt number for the outer surface of the channel (S 2) decreases with K.
