Abstract

The concept of staged regeneration as means of improving the desiccant cooling system performance is investigated. A mathematical model describing the heat and mass transfer processes that occur during sorption of water vapor in a dehumidifier is presented. The model treats the gas-side and solid-side resistances to heat and mass transports separately.
The effects of solid-side resistances on the performance are simulated and the results are compared with those of the simplified lumped parameter model where the solid-side diffusivity is represented by artificially increasing the film-side resistance.
The performance of open-cycle desiccant cooling systems with and without staged regeneration is analyzed and compared. The cooling capacity and coefficient of performance as functions of heat and mass transfer Biot numbers, stage fraction, and regeneration temperature are investigated.
