Abstract

This paper presents the outcome of a numerical study on the hydrodynamics and heat transfer characteristics of turbulent gas flows in square ducts. The algebraic stress model for the secondary flow was employed with the k−ε model for predicting the fully developed turbulent flow. Under the combined influence of turbulent forced convection and participating radiation, the temperature development takes place in the initial portion of the square duct. The radiative contribution of the gray gas has been modeled by an approximate differential method, the method of moments. Accordingly, the set of conservation equations of the general convection-diffusion type has been solved by the control volume technique. Results are presented and compared in terms of the heat transfer parameters with and without radiation, in graphical form to assess the importance of combined mechanisms in high temperature gas duct flows.
