Abstract

This paper deals with a numerical analysis of the two-dimensional melting process with the solid bulk motion in a rectangular cavity with isothermally heated side and bottom walls. A force balance between pressure in the thin liquid layer formed at the bottom of sinking solid bulk and apparent weight of solid allows to derive a closed-form velocity of bulk motion. Also, established are boundary conditions which can be applied to the analysis of melting process in the presence of the natural convection as well as the solid bulk motion. Computed results show that Archimedes number Ar has significant influences on the melting pattern, i.e., the role of bulk motion predominates over that of the natural convection as Ar increases.
