SIMULTANEOUS ESTIMATION OF THERMAL DIFFUSIVITY AND RELAXATION TIME WITH A HYPERBOLIC HEAT CONDUCTION MODEL

Abstract

An inverse analysis is applied for the simultaneous estimation of thermal diffusivity and relaxation time associated with a hyperbolic heat conduction equation, by using simulated temperature recordings taken in a semi-infinite medium subjected to a heat flux boundary condition. An examination of the sensitivity coefficients for three different types of applied heat flux including constant, on-off and single-pulse, revealed that the constant heat flux boundary condition should be preferred for the inverse analysis. A statistical analysis is presented in order to determine the confidence intervals for the estimated parameters. Results obtained over a wide range of the unknowns show that the method provides accurate estimates if reasonably good initial guesses arc available.
