Abstract

Hydrogen-absorbing alloys were applied to the development of various heat-utilization systems, such as heat-pump systems, heat transportation systems and refrigeration systems, for the effective use of heat. These materials were used to develop an experimental refrigeration system able to attain temperatures below -20°C and a COP (coefficient of performance) over 0.4 by using solar thermal energy of 140°C. The high performance of this system was achieved by developing a heat exchanger, hydrogen-absorbing alloys, and an optimized control method.
This paper describes the characteristics of the heat exchanger, system construction, and the results of continuous operation.
