Abstract

The integral transform method is reviewed as a computational approach in the solution of heat and fluid flow problems. The formal ideas behind this hybrid numerical-analytical technique are briefly indicated and the basic steps in the computational implementation are described. The major features of the method, derived from its analytic nature, such as the automatic global error control, the handling of irregular geometries, and the mild increase in computational cost for multidimensional situations, are then illustrated for various nonlinear examples. The usefulness of the method as a benchmarking tool is then demonstrated.
