Abstract

This paper has numerically investigated the stability characteristics of methanol boiling on a smooth or a porous-layer coated heated surface. The relative stability between nucleate and film boiling modes over a nonuniformly heated surface with or without a porous layer is described by the "equilibrium heat flux", which increases with layer thickness, but at a diminishing rate. Equal-area criterion is used to interpret multi-mode boiling data.
