Abstract

This paper presents a population balance model to predict the volumetric heat transfer coefficient for direct-contact evaporation in a bubble column. The model is based mainly on the energy balance and the population balance. Growth and breakage of droplets are included in the population balance model. Experimental data for volumetric heat transfer coefficients obtained in a column of 0.114 diameter (Steiner, 1993) are used to validate the model. The predicted results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data at different temperature differences for different flow rates of the dispersed phase. Influences of the distribution (mean value and standard deviation) of the initial drop diameter on the volumetric heat transfer coefficient are discussed.
