Abstract

Based on the conservation of energy and mass, mathematical equations describing frost formation on cryogenically cooled surface inside a tube were derived. Numerical analysis showed that frost aggravated the heat transfer. The heat transfer rate through the tube wall reduced by 80%, and the extreme share of the water vapor used to densify the frost layer was 0.6 however the flow velocity was. The thickness and density of the frost layer at different time along the tube were predicted. With the aid of the intemal image display system and probe-micrometer, the numerical model proposed in this paper was proven to be reliable. The phenomena of frost's being blown off and frost's collapsing were also observed.
