Abstract

Thermocapillary-driven convection in a half-zone liquid bridge exhibits a three-dimensional oscillatory flow after the onset of oscillation with an azimuthal wave number. Present study attempts to suppress the oscillatory flow experimentally by applying predetermined control algorithm. This algorithm heats the free surface locally with a prescribed frequency and intensity. In the experiment, the heating power and frequency were varied and the flow structure was observed with control state. As the result, a better suppression was achieved with increasing heating power within the present experimental range. The oscillatory flow was significantly suppressed by sufficiently high heating frequency.
