Abstract

Flow boiling heat transfer in a single 12.7×0.3 mm2 rectangular minichannel is studied experimentally. n-Hexane and n-octane are employed as test fluids. The test section, which is made of the nickel alloy Inconel 600, is electrically heated. The ranges of parameters are: mass fluxes between 50 and 400 kg/(m2s), heat fluxes up to 150 kW/m2 and atmospheric pressure at the outlet. Infrared thermography is employed to measure the temperature distribution on the channel surface. This measurement method is especially appropriate for the analysis of the transient behavior of boiling as well as for the determination of time-averaged values of the heat transfer coefficient. Infrared images of the channel are recorded at a frequency of 150 frames per second during 25 s. The behavior of the wall temperature is analyzed and local heat transfer coefficients are calculated. The experimental values are compared with those predicted by widely used correlations.
