Abstract

Shell and tube heat exchangers are widely used in various industrial and energy conversion applications. Although they are not specially compact, their robustness and shape make them well suited for heavy duty operations. Traditionally they have designed according to the Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association (TEMA) guidelines which is essentially a correlation based approach. The present work reports the application of a CFD model to the flow on the shell side of a heat exchanger. The work assess the influence of geometric details of the heat exchanger on the local heat transfer coefficient and flow patterns inside the shell. The results show that for the same flow conditions the reduction in baffle separation and cut result in substantial gains in heat transfer rates although the associated pressure drop increases enormously. The results also show that reducing the baffle separation is more effective that reducing the baffle cut in terms of heat transfer. The double segment baffle appears to present a good performance without excessive pressure drop penalty.
